Resumen:
This monoigraph was originally intended as a short review of the subjet to be published in Biological Reviews. However, as the writing proceeded, it became clear that I had underestimated the extent of the material which had to be included, the pile of manuscript putgrew the permitted bounds of the intended journal, and I count myshelf fortunate to have been able to present the finished work in the series "Frontiersof Biology".
My object has been to review critically all the known examples of Mendelian variation of biochemical characters in the vertebrate kingdom, with exception of man. This is the first time that this task has been attempted, and I hope that the extent of my previous ignorance of its size will be matched by the usefulness of this volume to other biologits working within the field. The subject matter has been gathered from journals dealing with widely different specialisms and the result can, in that sense, be regarded as interdisciplinary, however I have drawn attention to such generalization s as seem rasonable at this stage, particularly on the role of gene duplication.
Apart from the inherent interest and importance of the subject to geneticists and biochemists Ifeel strongly that the potential usefulness of biochemical variants as biological tools in sujects as different as tissue transplantation and ecology should never be forgotten. In particular, the variants which resemble those found in Man provide unique opportunities for experimental medicine... (PREFACE) I. E. Lush.
