The answer is that it really makes no difference what your expertise is. There are tips and techniques in these chapters for beginning, for intermediate and, yes, even for some ex pert users. Just look through-chances are you'll find some- thing that's helpful to you. Regardless of your expertise, this book should save you time and make you a much more effi- cient writer. This book is not organized by difficulty. Tips and Tech niques makes only the assumption that you already know the very basics-that you know how to load the program, move the cursor, create and save a document, and so forth. (That's all readily available from the documentation.) Once you know the basics, then you're ready to push WS, and Tips and Tech- niques shows you how to do it. This book offers you methods and tricks that WS users over the years have dreamt up. Many of the suggestions in here will probably be revelations to you. Some you may al- ready know and be using. They have all been gleaned by talk- ing with writers who have used WS for a very long time. Your author has used WS an average of at least five hours a work- ing day for over four years. If you already like WS, you'll love it after reading this book. WS is one of those programs that has been around a long time. It was first published back in the later 1970s primar- ily for CP/M operating systems. Since then it has undergone All of which is to say that sometimes whether or not you can may depend on what version of WS you own. As we go to which version (and to operating system) the tip or technique applies. In the meantime, it may be helpful to get the following overview. There have been three major releases of the origi nal WS as well as many minor updates. The latest release as of this writing is WS 3.31 (optionally including MailMerge, CorrectStar, and StarIndex.) In addition there has been a vir tually brand-new program called WS2000 and WS2000 Plus (with MailMerge, TelMerge, StarIndex, and CorrectStar). This program offers ease of use as well as advanced features and is quite different from the earlier WS versions. WordStar Tips and Techniques will prove helpful for vir- tually all releases of WS. Now let's see what you can push WS to do for you.
