Elements of Ecology and Field Biology is divided into four parts. PART I.- is introductory. Chapter 1 Provides an introduction or abstract of what is to come , gives a very brief introduction to systems analysis and homeostasis, and sets the ecosystem theme of the book. Chapter 2 is and introductionto evolutionary ecology and establishes the secondary evolutionary theme that runs through the book. PART II loks at the ecosystem from energy flow and biogeochimical cycles, including man's intervention into them, to enviromental influences, community structure, and ecosystem development. Although the organization inthis sectionis the same as that of ecology and Field Biology , second edition, readers of the latter will discover that some major changes have been made in this text. PART III covers population. Chapter 9 is concemed with natality , mortality, age structure , population growth, and relationships among individual members of the populatio. Chapter 10 deals with predation, competition, and other interactions among members of population of different species. Much of this material has been revise from Ecology and Field Biology , second edition, with new material and illustrations added. PART IV is a retum to the emphasis placed on ecosystems in the firts edition of Ecology and Field Biology . The material has been reorganizad and expanded with emphasis on structure and function. Chapter 11, 12, and 13 consider freshwater ecosystems Chapter 14, 15, 16, and 17 are on marine ecosystems.. terrestrial ecosystems follow with Chapter 18 providing an oviview of ecosystem distribution, Following this are chapters on grasslands, shrubland and deserts, tundra, and forets. How the instructor uses this book is up to the individual, for no one ecology course is taught in the same manner as another. The book even though relatively short, should be flexible enough to meet the requirements of any introductoory course.
