Alcance y contenido: The soybean is an important crop plant both in China, where it has a long history, and in the United States, where its history is comparatively brief. Only in the last 20 years has there been a substantial acreage in the United States, yet almost 60 per cent of the world production now lies in this country with steady expansion of domestic and export demands. It is a plant with intriguing characters; it is a short-season crop, responsive to photoperiod, with the nitrogen nutrition of a legume; its seed is rich both in protein and oil, with uses more diverse than most grains. It succeeds on nearly all soils that supply adequate water. As knowledge of the plant and experience with its culture have accumulated, acre yields have steadily increased. Better adapted varieties have become available so that the area within which it can profitably be grown has steadily enlarged. Even now there is good reason to believe that considerable potential for further improvement still remains. In this volume are brought together authoritative reviews of the available information on the soybean: genetics and improvement, physiology and nutritional requirements, culture and management, diseases and pests. Taken together this constitutes an impressive record of research in the basic and applied sciences relating to this crop plant. These reviews were originally published in Advances in Agronomy (Academic Press) but have been revised to bring them up to date. A. G. NORMAN August, 1963
